Depending on the client's needs, book publishing can go through different stages. First the client's manuscript is edited and proofread. Afterward, the client receives the manuscript back for review. Upon approval of the edited manuscript, the book is desktop published (or designed) into book form. We do not use templates for our designs, nor do we use generic covers; each book is different. Different books lend themselves to different "looks," and one single concept cannot possibly work for every book. Cover designs may either come from the client, or we can design them in-house. Below are layout samples from two books. One is a non-fiction book about the Vietnam War, called Honor & Courage, and the other is DogMan, which is a children's fiction book. It is also at this stage that graphics or photos are inserted into the book. Photos or artwork will many times come from the client, but we will look for appropriate artwork if the client wishes. Our goal is to get the book to look and read its best for the client. After the book is designed, the client receives a PDF file for review, and any revisions to the layout are made. Revisions may go through one cycle or several, depending on how many revisions the client wants. After revisions, the book is published. Unless the client requests otherwise, books are typically printed 6" x 9" with four-color soft covers and black-and-white interiors. Other sizes, however, are available, and color interiors as well as hard covers can be printed if the client desires. The client will then receive a final proof of the finished book for approval. At this point, the book is processed for distribution. Each book will contain an ISBN number on the back cover, which will make the book available to thousands of major booksellers, who will have the opportunity to carry the book in stores or on their websites. It will also be made available in Google book searches. In addition, the book will be displayed on our website, complete with ordering information. The author is also free to market the book any way he or she chooses. Turnaround time for book publishing varies with each client and depends on variables such as the length of the book and the number of revisions. Honor & Courage is a 220-page book and took three months to complete with numerous revisions. DogMan is a 64-page book that was finished in less than a month with minimal revisions.
